The ancient romans lived by this rule: threat your friend as if he might become an enemy. It speaks to one truth all men have difficulty embracing... friendship itself is a myth. There exists no such thing. The word implies an affiliation with no hidden agenda, no necessity, no politicking. The fantasies of children!
Friendly relationship is merely a temporary partnership based on mutual interest-- business or social. We only aid a comrade in distress to ensure they return the favor should we need it. Their pain is of fleeting consequence. The unspoken contract of trust is inevitably broken. Eventually, the arrangement is no longer beneficial for one player. One is ultimately forced to choose between the fortunes of their 'buddy' in need and their own agendas.
